Mentorship Program

Building Futures Through Meaningful Mentorship

For more than two decades, the NWFCU Foundation has partnered with local schools to connect students with dedicated mentors who show up consistently, build trust, and make a lasting difference.

What Is the Mentorship Program?

The NWFCU Foundation’s mentorship program pairs caring adult volunteers with students who can benefit from an additional trusted presence in their lives. Rooted in consistency and genuine connection, the program is designed not as a one-time intervention but as a sustained relationship that grows alongside the student.

Foundation mentors meet weekly with students, offering encouragement, stability, and support that extends beyond the classroom. These one-on-one relationships help build confidence, strengthen social-emotional skills, and give students a reliable adult to turn to as they face academic and personal challenges.

Where the Program Operates

The program is active at Dranesville Elementary School and Herndon High School, both part of Fairfax County Public Schools. At the elementary level, mentors help young students build confidence and develop the foundations they need to thrive. At the high school level, mentors stay engaged as students navigate the transitions of adolescence, academic pressure, and planning for the future.

This span across two stages of a student's educational journey reflects the program's core belief: lasting impact comes from mentors who stay committed over time.

How it works

Show Up Weekly

Mentors commit to meeting with their student once a week, creating a simple and consistent connection that helps students feel supported, encouraged, and seen.

Build the Relationship

Every mentor-student pairing is unique. Mentors listen, encourage, and walk alongside students through both everyday moments and bigger challenges, helping them develop confidence and resilience.

Support Their Journey

From elementary school through high school, mentors help students stay encouraged, focused, and connected while providing consistent support through academic and personal challenges.

What We Look For in a Mentor

The best mentors are not defined by credentials, but by consistency and genuine care. We look for individuals who:

  • Can commit to meeting with a student on a weekly basis
  • Are patient, encouraging, and reliable
  • Want to make a meaningful difference in a young person’s life
  • Are located within reach of our partner schools in Fairfax County

No special background is required, just a willingness to show up, build trust, and form a meaningful connection with a student.
